WELCOME TO Mr. Tash’s Class
1. What are Mr. Tash’s Classroom Expectations?
Classroom Expectations
~ BE ON TIME. Students should be in their seat, quiet, and listening for instructions when the bell rings.
~ BE PREPARED TO LEARN. Students should have all supplies at their desk. Assignments must be stapled and ready to turn in when the bell rings.
~ BE RESPECTFUL. Students should respect their teachers, fellow students, guests, and their belongings. Also, respect themselves!
~ COMMUNICATE PROPERLY. Students should raise their hand to speak, listen when others are talking, and use appropriate language.
~ TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR LEARNING. Students should stay focused, organized (know due dates and late policy), and be committed to giving their best effort every day. If they are having trouble, please encourage them to ask for help.
2. What are Mr. Tash’s Homework and Late Work policies?
Homework and Late Policy
Homework will either reinforce concepts worked on in class, or allow students to prepare for class discussions of text. It is important that students read all assigned materials so that they can actively participate in class the following day. (Occasional unannounced reading quizzes will help to reinforce the importance of this!) I follow the school policy regarding the length of time allowed to make up work. Unexcused late work [forgotten or uncompleted] can be submitted for half credit up to five days after the due date. After this time has passed it will result in a 0. Late work will also affect work habit grades (ie: 3+ late or missing assignments within a 6 week grading period will result in an N, 6+ late or missing assignments will result in a U on the progress report or report card)
3. How does Mr. Tash grade assignments?
Grading and Extra Credit
Grades are cumulative and point-based. General homework and class work ranges from 5-20 points. Quizzes are typically 25-50 points. Projects and major writing assignments range from 75-100 points. This is a generalization and specific point values are assigned based on depth of focus and assignment requirements. Some homework assignments will be scored based on completion.
Extra Credit is assigned at my discretion. Each trimester, students will receive three hall passes to use at their will. Each hall pass is worth 5 points of extra credit and is due on the last day of each trimester. Only students with zero missing assignments qualify for earning Extra Credit points
4. How can I help my child succeed in Mr. Tash’s class?
Helping Your Child Succeed in My Class -- and ALL Classes!
~ Encourage your child to complete his or her assignments in a thoughtful and thorough manner. Set up a calendar in their bedroom or homework area and schedule daily homework, long term projects or tests, important school or sporting events, etc.
~ Encourage organization—This will promote timeliness and effective study habits. If you're looking for a positive way to connect with your child, sit down once a week to help them organize their binder. Help them find late or missing assignments, review quizzes or tests, file away important papers, etc.
~ Encourage students to review the material and be active participants in the class discussions. Ask your child what they're currently reading in class or for SURE. Research what they're studying and ask them comprehension questions. Engage them in conversations and encourage them to clarify their responses to you. Go beyond the typical query of "how was your day," and you might be surprised at just how eloquently your child will learn to express him or herself.
5. How do I contact Mr. Tash?
Contact Information
E-mail is the most efficient form of communication. Many times, I even check my e-mail from home over the weekend.
My e-mail address is: [email protected]
You may leave a voicemail for me at (805) 498-3617 ext. 1305
I am unable to return phone calls when other students are present to ensure student confidentiality, but do try to return the calls within 24-48 hours.
Remind- safely text messaging homework and reminders without sharing off phone numbers or email addresses.
6. When can my child receive extra help in Mr. Tash’s class?
Student help
I frequently remind students that I have an open door policy and I am available most days before AND after school to help them, as well as at lunch with an appointment. Students should be encouraged to use this resource. Please help me in encouraging your students to be advocates for themselves. Furthermore, students should be reminded to seek help early, rather than waiting until the day before -- or day that -- a project or assignment is due to ask for help.
In closing:
Thank you for taking an active role in your child’s education. This is a year full of excitement and change as students look towards moving on to the next grade level. My goal is to prepare these students for the challenges of seventh grade, high school, and college/career both in the classroom and beyond. I aim to motivate and encourage students to adopt an attitude of success and commitment to do one’s best. I encourage students to work hard, be organized, and be committed to their education. It really is their path to a brighter future!
